The entire route is a freeway, paralleling I-95 and I-91 and providing an alternate route between New York City and Hartford in conjunction with the Merritt Parkway. The Wilbur Cross Parkway is 47 kilometers long and part of State Route 15.

At Stratford, New York City ‘s Merritt Parkway becomes Wilbur Cross Parkway at State Route 8. The highway has 2×2 lanes here and crosses the Housatonic River at Milford. The highway then runs west and north of the major city of New Haven, forming a parallel route along Interstate 95 and Interstate 91. From Hamden, the route mainly heads north, and at Meriden the Wilbur Cross Parkway ends at I-91 and continues on to Hartford.
History
According to beautyphoon, the Wilbur Cross Parkway is one of the older highways in the United States and construction began in 1939. The first section opened at Milford, but was delayed by World War II. In 1946 and 1947 some parts opened again and on November 1, 1949 the road was complete. It was a toll road at that time. The toll was lifted in 1988.
Naming
The highway is named after Wilbur Lucius Cross (1862-1948), the 71st governor of Connecticut between 1931 and 1939.

Every day, 56,000 to 65,000 vehicles drive around New Haven and 79,000 vehicles at Meriden.
