According to Itypetravel, Providence County, Rhode Island is a county located in the state of Rhode Island. It is the most populous county in the state with an estimated population of 631,601 in 2019. The county was founded in 1703 and named after Providence Plantations, a former colony that covered much of what is now Rhode Island and parts of Massachusetts. The history of Providence County can be traced back to the colonial period when it was part of Roger Williams’ original Providence Plantations. Williams had purchased the land from Narragansett Indians who had been living there for centuries prior to his arrival. In 1643, Providence Plantations became one of four townships that formed the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. This new colony was established by English settlers who were seeking religious freedom and economic opportunity away from their homeland. During the American Revolution, Providence County played an important role as a center for military activity and political meetings between British forces and local patriots. After independence was declared in 1776, Rhode Island’s government organized its counties into three districts: Washington (which included Providence), Kent, and Newport Counties. By 1844, these three districts were combined into one county known as Providence County. Today, Providence County is home to several major cities such as Cranston, Pawtucket, Central Falls and East Providence which are all part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. The county also contains many smaller communities such as North Smithfield, Johnston and Scituate which are all steeped in history and tradition dating back to colonial times. The economy is largely based on education services with many colleges such as Brown University located within its borders. As it stands today, Providence County has maintained its historical roots while embracing modernity through its diverse communities and strong economy.
