According to Itypetravel, Columbus County is located in southeastern North Carolina and is home to over 58,000 people. The county was formed in 1808 from a portion of Bladen County and has since grown to become one of the most populous counties in the state. The earliest inhabitants of Columbus County were Native American tribes such as the Catawba, Cheraw, Tuscarora, Waccamaw Siouan and Lumbee Indians. These tribes were primarily hunter-gatherers who relied on the resources of the area for their sustenance. The first Europeans arrived in the area in 1725 when a group of Swiss-German settlers established a settlement called New Bern near present-day Whiteville. During the Revolutionary War, many local residents supported the Patriot cause while others remained loyal to Britain. After the war, Columbus County became an important center for trade and industry with tobacco being an especially important crop. This activity led to increased population growth and by 1820 there were over 8,000 people living in Columbus County. In 1861, Columbus County was heavily involved in the Civil War with many local men enlisting on both sides of the conflict. Following Reconstruction after the war ended, many African Americans left Columbus County due to racial discrimination and economic hardship leading to a decline in population throughout much of the 19th century. Despite this decline, however, new industries such as textiles began to emerge which helped bring new economic opportunities to Columbus County during this time period. In recent years, Columbus County has seen increased population growth due largely to its proximity to larger cities such as Wilmington and Myrtle Beach which have attracted many new residents looking for more affordable housing options than those available within city limits. Additionally, tourism has become an important part of its economy with visitors coming from all over for its beaches and other attractions such as Lake Waccamaw State Park or historic downtown Whiteville which features several shops and restaurants that are popular among both locals and tourists alike. Today, Columbus County is home to a vibrant community full of history that continues to offer plenty of opportunities for residents and visitors alike whether it’s outdoor recreation or simply enjoying some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality.
