According to Itypetravel, Emmet County is located in the northwest corner of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, and is home to the city of Petoskey. The county was originally part of Mackinac County, which was established by the Michigan Territorial Legislature in 1818. In 1840, Emmet County was created out of Mackinac County and named after Irish patriot Robert Emmet. The area that would become Emmet County was originally inhabited by several Native American tribes including the Ottawa, Chippewa, Potawatomi and Odawa. In 1855, white settlers began to arrive in the area, drawn by the abundance of timber and natural resources. The first permanent settlement was established in 1859 when William Peltier established a sawmill on Bear River.
