According to Itypetravel, Nantucket County is a county located on the island of Nantucket in Massachusetts. The island has been home to people since at least the 9th century when it was inhabited by Native Americans. In 1602, English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold named the island after the Wampanoag word for “faraway land” and it soon became a popular destination for whalers and fishing vessels. The first European settlers arrived in 1659 and established a trading post. By 1714, Nantucket had become one of the most prosperous whaling ports in America and was home to some of the wealthiest merchants in New England. The peak of Nantucket’s prosperity came during the 19th century when it was known as “the capital of American whaling” and its population grew to more than 10,000 people. Throughout its history, Nantucket has been shaped by its connection to both nature and culture. The island is home to many species of wildlife including gray seals, humpback whales, piping plovers, ospreys, herons, terns, loons and more. Additionally, it is home to many cultural attractions such as galleries, museums, lighthouses and other historic sites that reflect its long maritime history. Today, Nantucket County is a popular tourist destination due to its beaches, lighthouses and quaint downtown area with cobblestone streets lined with shops and restaurants. While much of its economy still relies on fishing and tourism; technology companies are also starting to move into the area due to its proximity to Boston which makes it an attractive place for businesses looking for a quieter atmosphere without sacrificing access to a larger city. Nantucket County is home to the Nantucket Public Schools district, which serves students in grades K-12. The district consists of five schools: Nantucket Elementary School, Cyrus Peirce Middle School, Nantucket High School, and two charter schools: the Nantucket Lighthouse Charter School and the Nantucket New School. The district’s mission is to “prepare all students for success in college and career by providing a rigorous education that emphasizes creativity and critical thinking.” The district strives to create an environment where all students can reach their full potential by focusing on academics, social-emotional learning, technology integration, and character development. The Nantucket Public Schools also provides access to specialized learning opportunities such as Advanced Placement classes for high school students and a variety of special education services including speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. In addition to these services, the district also has a strong commitment to community engagement through its partnerships with local organizations including nonprofits, businesses and universities.
