According to Itypetravel, Gooding County is located in the south central part of Idaho and was established in 1913. The county was named after Frank R. Gooding, a former governor of Idaho who served from 1909 to 1911. The county has an area of 1,818 square miles and its population as of 2019 was estimated to be 14,828 people. The first inhabitants of Gooding County were Native American tribes such as the Shoshone, Bannock, Northern Paiute and Nez Perce who lived in the area for centuries before white settlers arrived in the late 1800s. The first settlers were largely ranchers and farmers looking to take advantage of the fertile land and abundant water sources found in the Snake River Valley. The city of Gooding was founded in 1906 as a railroad town by brothers Charles and William Gooding. The city quickly grew into an agricultural hub for surrounding areas due to its access to transportation infrastructure and plentiful water sources for irrigation. During this time, several other small towns were also established throughout the county including Wendell, Bliss, Hagerman and Wendell Junction. In addition to its agricultural industry, Gooding County is also known for its mining industry which began in the early 1900s with gold mining operations in nearby Big Creek Canyon. Later on copper mining operations began near Bliss which continued until 1945 when it ceased due to falling copper prices during World War II. Today, Gooding County remains largely rural but continues to have a thriving agricultural industry with local crops such as potatoes, onions, sugar beets and alfalfa being grown throughout the region. Additionally, tourism has become increasingly popular over recent years with visitors coming from all over Idaho and beyond to enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting and camping that are available throughout the county’s scenic mountains and valleys. Gooding County is part of the Gooding Joint School District, which was formed in 1947 and serves students from the cities of Gooding, Bliss, Hagerman and Wendell. The district is comprised of five schools: Gooding Elementary, Hagerman Elementary, Wendell Elementary, Gooding Middle School and Gooding High School.
