In the wake of the euro crisis in Italy, unemployment in San Marino rose to over 6 percent in the summer of 2012 and was estimated at close to 9 percent in 2014. Unemployment has traditionally been low in San Marino, which is partly due to the possibility of also looking for work in Italy. Many San Marines work in Italy and vice versa. About a fifth of the workforce is Italian.
