The vast majority of Kiribati are completely dependent on fishing and farming for household needs. Only one in four has a regular, paid job.
Of those who work in wages, over half are civil servants. About a fifth work in agriculture and the rest are in industry. The official unemployment rate is relatively low, but most of the population is underemployed.
